Why are florists paid so little?
I recently finished my floral design courses and am quite discouraged by the starting wage employers are offering. I not expecting to get rich working within the industry, but the average wage so far is $8 hourly (CAN). I realize that one has to work their way up, but really who can live on that and be able to save for a rainy day. When you have paid alot of money to take the nessarry courses, where is the financial gratification in the long run? I make more money serving tables which is a no brainer. Floral design is an art and takes creative tallant to be good at what you do. Not that I would call myself an artist yet, I have a long way to go, but I know people who have been in the business a long time, and arn't nearly paid what they deserve. Any imput would be appreciated!

- It is a shame that people who provide a beautiful artistic skill are not paid better, but it's a fact. Most floral shops will pay only a little past minimum wage. Instead of seeking employment in a floral shop, try to align yourself with a home decorating office, or professionals. Those in the home decorating profession will often employ florists to make silk or permanent designs for their customers and this can be very very lucrative.
- You're probably making more than the rookie musician or actor. No 9 to 5 for them, but they knew what they were getting into. Did you check starting salary before starting your courses?
- It's called "Supply & Demand." If there were fewer florists, the remaining ones could charge more.
- I opened up[ a Florist shop for my wife. She retired from that 12 years ago. She made more money than you can shake a stick,. We did Weddings, Birthdays, Mitzi's...ect Its not just about selling flowers. You must get involved with your community needs and go GET THAT MONEY
